A Promise Kept (Narcissus)

Planting bulbs in the fall may be a leap of faith for me but the first tender sprouts continuing to grow through snow, rain by the bucketload and fierce March winds is a promise kept. Last November I put my faith in the bulbs. Plump, squat, tiny or as big as an egg, covered with papery brown skin, they rustled dryly when I reached in the bag. The life inside was a mere promise.

Whatever botanical alchemy transformed the dry nubs is now complete and the results are everything the garden faithful could hope for.

Narcissus cyclamineus 'Jetfire'
These were stunning! The colors were almost fluorescent against rainy April skies.

Narcissus bulbocodium conspicuus ‘Hoop Petticoat’
This one was a surprise. The 'hoop' is dainty and much smaller than I expected, tiny and delicate with grassy foliage.

Narcissus triandrus 'Hawera'
These are so sweet. The petals recurve slightly on multiple blossoms. I hope they naturalize as well as I read.

Oo. Hawera looks lovely in your photo.

So often I am looking at so many of the daffs and narcissi at once I get overload. And catalog photos often miss giving you the real idea of the plant. The flower color looks much softer here than in the catalogs.

Is that the photo, or is it pretty true to what your eye is seeing?

Hi Jenn. The color of Hawera is a softer yellow than many of the other daffs. The color of the photo is true to what I'm seeing

This is the first time I've grown Hawera and I really like it.

We've had some Hawera for a couple of years now here in northern NY. Last fall we planted 300 bulbs & they are just now sticking their green shoots up. I'll have photos when they bloom.

Wow! 300 must put on quite a show. Hope you can post your photos.

Only a couple of daffodils have come back reliably in my garden in Austin, Texas and Hawera is one of them. ("Ice Follies" is the other.) I think that one of our problems here is that it doesn't stay cold enough over the winter for most daffodils.

I really love Hawera. She is very delicate and pale like a fairy with the wind blowing through her hair.

Hi Sally/all -

Just to let you know that you're 'quoted' on my post this week, thanks for the permission. Your daffs got a mention too! It's been raining all morning here... good for the green stuff but not for my partner who Vespa-s to work! Have good days...
